leg

Hey,
So, wow, i'm definitely not having the best december. My grandpa passed away, i broke my leg, i got pneumonia, and who knows what else is left for me. Hopefully nothing.

So about my leg, i went skiing on the 5th of dec. and ended up breaking my leg. I was just skiing on one of the groomers when i hit a patch of snow from the snowmaker that was a completely different type of snow. It was a lot more dense, close to 30% water where as the snow i was skiing was closer to 10%. When i hit the snow, it was as if i had skied right into a patch of wet cement. The snow grabbed my skis and threw me forward.

When i stopped slidding, my right ski had been thrown off me, but my left ski was still on me. The problem was that my knee was straight up in the air, and my ski/foot was sideways. I immediately knew that my leg (tib/fib) was broken.

I called for ski patrol, and as she was approaching, i saw her even get thrown forward. She was going super slow in a plow skiing with a sled for me, so i knew that it wasn't just me that felt the effects of that damn snow.

I was relieved when i found out who my ski patrol person was. I've known Erika for awhile now (3 seasons) and knew i was in capable hands. She got me down to the clinic and then the real care started.

The most painful thing in the world happened next. They got my ski boot off. It was like they were ripping my foot off it hurt soo much.

They finally got it off and got some morphine in my system. They called for ALS (advanced life support ie. a paremedic unit) and started to look at what they could do for me while i was still there in the clinic. They took a couple of x-rays and immediately knew that i needed to go into surgery. It wasn't life threatining, but i wasn't going to be able to ski again without it.

I got to the ER, and they admitted me into the hospital. The doc gave me two options.

Option 1:
I could be put in a cast that would be all the way up to my groin for 3 months, then a smaller one that would go up to my knee for another 2 months, then plenty of rehab.

Option 2:
Surgery. They would put me under, cut me up a bit, and put a rod in my tibia. I would have the rod in me for the rest of my life, but i would be skiing again in march. I would never have a cast on me.

I choose option 2 obviously.

I have the coolest x-rays showing how big the rod is. It's huge! almost the entire length of my tibia.

Anyways, the surgery was at 10:30 that same night, and i was released the next day. I went to my grandpa's funeral straight from the hospital. I was most definately not ready to leave the hospital.

I was at my grandpa's funeral for a total of 5 minutes and knew that i had to leave. I went up to brighton after that and tried to recover.

I was there for 4 days and got super sick. I couldn't focus on anything. My head was spinning, i couldn't look at anything, i had to get back to the hospital.

I got back to the er and found out that i had pneumonia. I was given antibiotics and sent to my grandma's place. I've been there since, and will be here probably until tuesday. I'm actually feeling human right now.

Hopefully, from here on, things will only get better.

Wish me luck!
